Welcome to The Angry Video Guy
The Angry Video Guy, You ask?
That’s right. I’ve been doing video production work in advertising for a long time now, and everyone in the field could probably describe themselves as such. I’ve done a lot of freelance and have done the staff thing at advertising agencies. I’ve been lead on motion graphics design, video editing, VFX, cinematography, and countless other jobs. As I get older and settle into the “sour veteran” archetype I thought it would be fun to blog about it.
I’d like to discuss on how to get into the industry. A lot of younger people ask, with wonder in their eyes, how can they get a job doing video production and TV commercials. I see so many websites about the art of what we do and they focus 100% on the craft, the technology. I’m here to tell you you don’t need to be great. To be successful (aka make a living off what you like to do) you need to be competent and sell yourself.
That is the biggest overall lesson I’ve learned working sets and jobs. The highest ranked, highest paid, highly respected creative types know how to sell themselves. None of my bosses were ever great. The Creative Directors I’ve worked with are some of the most uncreative types (in the traditional ‘artistic’ sense..I’ll touch on that sometime later) I’ve ever met. But damn can they talk a great game. The true creatives, the true artists, are the people who spend their time working instead of talking. That was me.
I also need a way to stay motivated to keep up with industry news. So I’ll be sharing news, interesting tutorials, creating tutorials, and sharing work I think is interesting.
Hopefully you enjoy reading as much as I like sharing it.
