It’s hard for me to wrap my head around the planning this takes!
There is pre-production and then there is this. In a project for Audi Canada through Zulu Alpha Kilo, we have the combo of Sherpas Cinema, Accomplice Media, and the projection mapping expertise of Go2 Productions. It came out a few weeks ago but I just saw it now, and looked into it to find out more. I thought it was all post compositing. Dead wrong.
First, just watch the spot:
Now realize what you just watched was all done in real time on set.
It’s really incredible. The amount of planning and sync this must have taken seems daunting. They claim 100% in camera with no post (beyond editorial & color). Go2Productions utilized 20,000 lumens projectors to acheive the effects, and mapped them onto the Q7 and the surrounding environments. It was shot at Fortress Mountain, Alberta at 7500′ above sea level. Temperatures on set approached -20C so it must have been one hell of a job. I don’t know enough about projection mapping to say how difficult it was, but from an outsider perspective, mind=blown.
Director Dave Mossop said;
“We were presented with a wonderful set of challenges,”
-20C is “wonderful” huh? Those guys are warriors. Great stuff.
Also take a look at a behind the scenes clip here (although I would love to hear production commentary on it unfortunately there is none)
