Sharpen Video Like a Samurai With Digital Anarchy’s Sharpening Plugin
Cuz their swords are sharpened. Get it?
I’ve always appreciated a good sharpening algorithm, to the dismay of my friend Chase, the video purist. Part of my post chain *typically* includes some kind of sharpening in the stack. I keep it conservative, but I get a little demon whispering in my ear if I don’t do it.
Look, if focus is missed, you’re fucked. Don’t use sharpening to fix that. But you can use it to crisp up an overall image in very small pinches. Like salt. Digital Anarchy has piqued my interest with their Samurai Sharpen package which is compatible with FCPX, Premiere, and After Effects.
The main hook of their package is the masking features that let you sharpen the high frequency details you want to see, but keep the softer parts……soft. The general theory goes that the shadows & highlights receive a lower amount of sharpening. Sharpening shadows generally brings out noise, and sharpening highlights can blow out the details.
Featuring GPU acceleration and priced competitively at $129, it’s one of those plugins I might just grab to have in a pinch.
Look out for a post comparing their software to some other sharpening methods, it’s on my to-do list.
