NAB 2017 – Zylight & Chimera Create “Active Diffusion” – Remotely Change Light from Hard to Soft
We are so close to everything on set being electronically controlled.
Zylight, a lighting manufacturer specializing in LED fixture technology, founded in 2003. They have teamed up with Chimera to create and offer their technology called Active Diffusion to allow remotely adjustable diffusion panels.
Zylight will create the electronics and controllers, while Chimera will manufacture the panels themselves and distribute the technology.
The panels are actually a gel with a containing small metal particles that default to an opaque state. As charge is applied the particles line up and become transparent. The Zylight panels are ready to use standalone or insert into a Chimera softbox as long as the fixture is a cool light (LED or Fluro). The operator can adjust the diffusion from a remote handset which essentially changes the light quality from hard to soft and anywhere in between.
First prototyped at NAB in 2010, the production version will be demoed this year at NAB 2017 at the Chimera booth C5046. Here is the most recent media I could find from 2010 where they demo an early version:
