That stupid little teaser Panasonic had out at NAB 2017 is finally going to be something real this Friday, June 2 at Cine Gear Expo. While they pulled off an uber tease at NAB by simply showing a camera body underneath a draped cloth, I’m going to use my educated guess machine that’s based on what I’d like to see from Panasonic with this camera:
The camera will be a low priced cinema camera with a place in the lineup between the GH5 and the Varicam LT. I think it can be looked at as a replacement to the DVX200. Either EF or MFT mount. If Panasonic really want to demand the attention of shooters I think it needs to be shipped with an EF mount and s35 sized sensor.
Whatever sensor size we get it will be a 4K sensor, internal recording to SD cards, with sensor windowed high speed options. The hope is that it supports multiple codec options – at least h.264 but AVC-Intra 4K plus ProRes would be fantastic.
It’ll have Standard low end I/O options but ability to output SDI Raw feed to recorders would be an essential feature. Obvious from the mystery photo is the fact the camera is small – almost FS5 sized. I’d reckon we’re looking at a price point between $4000 – $6500 range.
You can tune into the announcement live on Facebook at 4:15 (PST) on June 2.
