Oats Studios – Volume 1 – “Firebase” from Neill Blomkamp & Downloadable Steam Assets
One of my favorite things as a kid was buying these little SciFi compilation books containing a load of short stories. Some made you optimistic, some scared you, and some made you reflect.
Thees badass SciFi shorts from Neill Blomkamp’s Oats Studios take me back to that. If you know Blomkamp’s style there is usually someone’s head popping or guts exploding. Badass.
The second short was released today, titled Firebase and it is totally worth a half hour of your day to watch. Take Doom, Predator, Vietnam, along with some awesome vfx mixed into non-linear storytelling – Turn the lights out and enjoy. And if you’re into VFX read below on how you can get some assets to mess around with.
There are multiple ways to support Oats Studios, as Blomkamp is trying to drum up support and cash flow to continue making them. I suspect why his first film District 9 was such a success was that he was left to his own devices. The follow up films Elysium and Chappie just didn’t have that original spark and maybe it was because of the control enacted by Hollywood. With Oats Studios and these short films, they have that fresh feel to them where it is one vision, without worry of satisfying focus groups watching screeners.
One of the coolest things they are doing to generate income is the ability to purchase assets from Steam. You’ll get high res versions of the films, surround mixes, artwork, and 3D assets. You’ll get to see some 3D models and even mess around with rigged characters.
