War for the Planet of the Apes Behind the Scenes – Performance Capture VFX Powerhouse Headed for a $55MM+ Opening
The last 5-10 years of superhero blockbuster films have made me a pretty grumpy dick. I hate superhero films, I am beginning to hate Star Wars, and shockingly am tired of seeing Dwayne The Rock Johnson in every single film. (Admire his success of course, but damn). War for the Planet of the Apes is a franchise I actually still look forward to, all of the films are original compared to other big budget options, and with that comes the great VFX work.
Anytime a film thrives or fails based on the acting ability of a CG character I like to pay attention to see and learn what they did right and what they did wrong.
Weta Digital is at the helm of the VFX ship for War for the Planet of the Apes, along with long time collaborator Andy Serkis who built his career on creating compelling performance captured characters. Check out a before and after of his performance with this teaser VFX clip:
And as a consumer of all things behind the scenes, enjoy this short featurette where you can peep some cool live compositing and motion playback of the actors on set
War for the Planet of the Apes releases July 14th, and Variety has it tracked for a $55-$65 Million dollar opening. The review embargo has already been lifted and it’s sitting at a pretty 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
