Disney Sued Over MOVA Facial Performance Capture Tech Used in Blockbuster Films
This is pretty crazy.
Rearden LLC has filed a suit against Disney for allegedly using stolen performance capture tech called MOVA Contour which had it’s big breakthrough in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Rearden LLC is hitting Disney with patent, copyright, and trademark claims which would prevent Disney from distributing Guardians of the Galaxy, Beauty and the Beast, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The suit alleges that both the technology and cameras were stolen from Rearden LLC after Disney had previously contracted use of the performance capture on “four previous major motion pictures” and that behind the scenes photos from Digital Domain shows their rig being used on set illegally still containing their Asset Tag on the camera.
What a crazy allegation, although you know Disney will exit unscathed with their mammoth law team. If you’d like to read the suit it is available here.
