Sony FS5 Firmware 4.0 Available With 120FPS (If You Pay) and Hybrid Log Gamma HDR Support
The FS5 firmware update has dropped, and you gotta love $ony.
The update includes support for Continuous 1080p 120FPS shooting. Yes “support” is right because you have to pay a shit ton $499 to unlock it for the camera. You’ll have to decide whether you use 120fps enough to make that a worthy investment. You can already shoot 200/240FPS with a 8 second buffer in camera, and I think for most that is enough.
The $499 is bullshit for that feature and I think the ‘buzz’ around getting a feature for free would have outweighed any kind of loss for development from Sony. When the camera retails for $5749 a $500 upgrade just to shoot 120FPS continuous is not a good value proposition.
The far more interesting feature is the addition of Hybrid Log Gamma, or HLG. Read what that means in my previous post.
The last note in FS5 Firmware 4.0 is allowing users to lower the native ISO from 3200 to ISO 2000 in S-log 2 and 3. Ideal for outdoor shooting to lower the sensitivity of the sensor with less ND filtration to get a proper exposure.
