Storage Stuffs – USB 3.2 Announced and Samsung T5 SSD Released
The latest revision to the USB Type C spec announced by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group is version 3.2. Not to be officially final until Sepetember with hardware likely to be released in 2018, any speed increase is of great interest to production pros as it means less time waiting for footage and even more capable portable drives that be used for live projects.
USB 3.2 will take the dual lane 10Gbps 3.1 speeds and double it to 20Gbps total over Superspeed+ certified Type C cables. The cables are the same but you will need a 3.2 compatible host and device. So expect to upgrade that expansion card if you’re not building a new rig.
Samsung T5 SSD Announced
Portable SSD’s were a godsend to on set data management in small productions and they keep increasing in speed. Samsung’s T5 series SSDs are now available for purchase and they are smaller and faster than their previous gen.
Available in four different sizes of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, they are USB 3.1 Gen 2 drives capable of read speeds up to 540 MB/s and write speeds to 515 MB/s. I think picking up a few 500GB is the best bet. Current Prices as of August 17th below:
- T5 250GB – $129.99
- T5 500GB – $197.99
- T5 1TB – $397.99
- T5 2TB – $797.99
